17 affordable homes on a challenging island site in Monks Hill, as part of Brick By Brick’s ‘Croydon Smaller Sites Programme’

Farnborough Court responds to its position on a constrained but highly visible island site by breaking the building into two distinct volumes to maximise all round aspect. The glazed circulation core expresses the two volumes whilst offering natural daylighting and views from the communal areas at every level. The material palette combines three contrasting brick tones with the two wings expressed differently using colour and texture to distinguish the modulated forms and to reduce the sense of scale.

The building is set within a south facing communal garden and a landscaped public space to the north of the building, including an informal play route and green space to benefit residents of the development and the wider neighbourhood. The landmark building on the crest of the hill frames views from the adjacent green open spaces and streets to become a distinctive contribution to the residential character of the Monks Hill estate.
